The very light metal beryllium is one of the diamagnetic elements.
“Continue reading” for other measurements of diamagnetic properties.
I did test a beryllium specimen. Well doesn’t everyone have one lying around? This was a 1x 3 cm sheet intended for a vacuum window for an x-ray tube. I also have argon lasers which use beryllium oxide.
This is my set-up to test for paramagnetism by measuring weight change when a magnet is brought near.
Anyway I almost missed that a magnet made it heavier not lighter so it is diamagnetic not paramagnetic. It changes weight by 10%. Not enough to float on my standard diamagnetic array. Maybe if I make a Halbach array but I have to do the numbers. That would double the field so maybe only 20% weight. Needs 100% but magnet distance would be a lot closer. Perhaps a pyramidal array?
