This is my radioactivity display showcase. I needed a way to demonstrate these things in an interactive way without supervision.

Thorium
SuperHero Element time. THOR: An essential part of his hammer is of course, Thorium.
For ordinary mortals, Thorium 2% is added to tungsten welding rods. Here it has a count of 564 CPM (counts per minute). Background radiation is about 50 CPM.

Nuclear Projects To Do
This is a grab bag of ideas for further nuclear projects. These are two tritium phosphor coated tubes that glow in the dark permanently.

Polonium 210
Polonium 210
A polonium 210 source in a needle is used for Alpha particle experiments such as cloud chambers. The activity is less than 0.1 uCurie and the half life is 138 days. I had better get on and do stuff before it goes away.

Spark detector for Alpha particles
This is a spark detector for alpha particles from an Americium sample. It runs on 6 kV via a 400 k ohm resistor and a 100 pF capacitor and has about 0.2 inches between wires and is about 0.2 inches deep.

Background radiation, Australia
Background radiation recording at Bunbury, Australia
This is an updating graph of background radiation in my home town in Western Australia. It is updated 6 hourly. It runs whenever I have my Geiger counter on. Typically the background is about 60 counts per minute (CPM).

Under an Atomic bomb – Trinitite
Trinitite is glassified soil from the Trinity site of the first atomic blast in 1945. 67 years later it is only mildly radioactive. The site is now covered and new samples are not able to be collected. Nevertheless it was only a few dollars on eBay for this 1.83 g sample. This sample is seen over the port of my pancake Geiger counter.
