Polonium 210
Polonium 210
A polonium 210 source in a needle is used for Alpha particle experiments such as cloud chambers. The activity is less than 0.1 uCurie and the half life is 138 days. I had better get on and do stuff before it goes away.

Background radiation, Australia
Background radiation recording at Bunbury, Australia
This is an updating graph of background radiation in my home town in Western Australia. It is updated 6 hourly. It runs whenever I have my Geiger counter on. Typically the background is about 60 counts per minute (CPM).

Gamma Radiation
Uranium ore (Yellowcake) emits gamma radiation. The Geiger counter reads 108,000 CPM through the plastic of the container.

Tritium
Tritium tubes have radioactive tritium gas and a phosphor which glows constantly. Tritium is hydrogen with two neutrons. It is radioactive with a half life of 12.3 years.
