This is an updating graph of background radiation in my home town in Western Australia.  It is updated 6 hourly. It runs whenever I have my Geiger counter on. Typically the background is about 60 counts per minute (CPM).

Typically 50% comes from naturally occurring Radon gas. This is a breakdown product of thorium and seeps out of the ground. There are lesser amounts from other terrestrial sources and cosmic rays.

There are networks of enthusiasts monitoring background radiation around the world that contribute to readings using this equipment.

Don’t miss that gamma ray burst ever again! Although it could just be me testing out radioactive samples…
