Can Crusher 1
My earliest can crusher. Can crushing is a sudden constriction of a can using very high induced current.

Measurement of High Current Pulses
Measurement of High Current Pulses (or my multimeter doesn’t have a 100,000 amp scale). The upper trace shows a peak current of two squares (20,000 A) and lower trace a peak voltage of nearly 2 squares of around 5 kV. Note how the current lags behind the applied voltage.

Measurement of Current WITHIN the Can
It is of interest to know the current induced in a can at the time of can crushing. This can be done by direct measurement of current with a Rogowski coil or by measuring voltage drop in the can.

Measurement of High Voltage Pulses
I have now measured the high voltage pulses during can crushing (lower trace). The lower trace shows 2000 V peak with around 75% voltage reversal. Current in the upper trace is around 12,000 A.

Can Crusher 2
Can Crusher 2 reaches a power able to tear the can in half. This one uses a third high voltage 500 joule medical defibrillation capacitor. This makes a total of 1500 joules and with straight and shortened wiring paths this model performs much better.

Can Crusher 4
Can Crusher 4 using a pulse capacitor bank rated up to 10 kJ. Time to get serious! My big caps have arrived. Total stored energy with all charged to capacity is 10 + 10 + 8 = 28 kJ.
