Amanda is HOT

Amanda is HOT following I-131She has just had radioactive iodine treatment for thyrotoxicosis from Graves Disease.
“Continue reading” for more details and photos.
She had 600 MBq (megabecquerels) of Iodine 131 administered 30 h ago.

She registered on my Geiger counter as soon as she walked in the room above the background count of about 50 counts per minute. This is her count now next to her thyroid – 236,804 counts per minutes (which will be gamma radiation).  This is more than my Uranium Yellow cake ore.
She should not have daytime close contact with people for 5 days and should not sleep with anyone for 20 days.

It is simple, safe and effective treatment and is commonly used.
Long term risks with studies out to 40 years indicate no increased mortality from cancer deaths from radioactive Iodine. (there is a lot more information in these studies that I can quote).
So if the risks to her are low, the risks to others must be extremely low, which kinda’ makes me wonder whether Amanda is HOT after all.

Amanda is Hot. Certainly hotter than my uranium ore, and other radioactive sources

This graph puts things into perspective showing a background of 50 counts per minute (CPM) and a number of other sources of radioactivity including uranium ore.

Amanda's thyroid radioactivity 34 days later

Here is Amanda 34 days later.  I am was surprised by the level of radioactivity left.  The half life of I131 is around 8 days so the radiation should have dropped like this:

Starting   level = 1

After 8 days level = 1/2

after another 8 days = 1/4

after another 8 days = 1/8

after another 8 days = 1/16

With the original count being 236,000, the count now should be 236000/16 = 14,700
It is actually 45,000.  Why so much more?
