I use steel wool in many sparkly effects. Here are some examples.

Firstly some burning steel wool on my hand. Ignited with a blow torch, it continues to burn slowly as in the video.
Does it hurt? A bit when the molten iron balls roll onto my hand. I did have a little puddle of water under the wool which may help.
Ignition above with a pulse capacitor. This adds the explosive electrical energy of the spark to spray the metal globules in a pyrotechnic display.
If you take a long exposure the sparkles leave long uniform trails.
Ignite a ball of steel wool on a string and spin it around leaves a ring of sparkles. More details on my steel wool light painting page.
Make them more colourful with a rotating colour filter. I don’t know of anyone else using this technique.
