The photo below shows distant lightning with a ground strike. In both the lightning was so far that thunder wasn’t heard. There was no rain either.
My understanding of lightning capture on film is to be in an elevated sheltered place. You and the camera need to be dry even in the winds of a thunderstorm. You need to be protected from a lightning stroke as well. I once had the experience of being on the 47th floor of a Hotel with a corner window of panoramic views and seeing a lightning storm pass over the city. Sadly, it was before I had a suitable camera to take long exposures repeatedly.
The sun through smoky skies from controlled burning. Short wavelength blue, green and yellow are scattered more. Red and infra-red pass through.
