A black oily magnetic liquid forms strange spikes when a magnet is applied. Ferrofluid is a bizarre fluid that is magnetic made of nano sized magnetite particles contained in micelles in a mineral oil base.

Laser Galvanometer 1D
Laser galvanometer scribbles from discarded pen recorder from dumpster diving at the Physics Dept. Yes, it looks two dimensional as I moved the camera in a circle during the exposure. “Continue reading” for more galvanometer information. Continue reading
Laser Galvanometers 2D
I arranged two mirror galvanometers to give two dimensional control of a 10mW HeNe laser beam. “Continue reading” for further information and another 9 photos. Continue reading
Spot Welder AC
I made this as I thought I may need something to make joins for use in a vacuum that may get red hot. Epoxy and plain or silver soldering would not do. It uses a 6 V 90 A transformer and is able to spot weld a variety of mostly thin metal sheets.

Homopolar Motor
Homopolar motor made with 4 common household parts.
This homopolar motor has 4 components and takes seconds to make. Running here at 5800 RPM. It ran for 2:35 minutes once the power is off because the bearing is only a point with much of the weight taken off by gravity.

Marinov Motor
For a morning diversion from my other projects, I made a Marinov motor. This is a motor that is simply two ball races and an axle.

Electrolytic Capacitor Bank 1.5 kJ
This electrolytic capacitor bank 1.5 kJ has SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) switching to control peak currents of thousands of amps. Mostly to make big bangs but also to drive projectile devices such as a rail gun and coil gun.

Coilgun 3kJ
I have used my big capacitor bank to drive the coilgun 3kJ at higher levels.
