Fluorescein Display II

Now this is trippy. I knocked this up for my 2014 Open Day. Fluorescein powder dropped on a 3 foot column of water and lit by a 3 W UV light. In slow motion, the green fluorescent liquid forms inverted mushrooms, swirls, sheets and eddies which are constantly moving.

Someone said” See that angry spirit in front of you”. Can you see it?

Sick of green? Throw in some yellow rhodamine or even a drop of (non-fluorescent) food colouring.

Mesmerising. Photos do not do it justice due to focusing difficulties with the magnifying column of water .

The whole display takes place over 20 mins or so before it starts to get too muddied but there is a lot of minute detail happening during that time.The set up with an acrylic drum from a printing set-up. I have two of these and have made them up into a display, so I can run them at different times. There is a 3W ultraviolet LED for good illumination of the whole length of the display. The perforated strip here is an attempt to help focusing.
