Now this is trippy. I knocked this up for my 2014 Open Day. Fluorescein powder dropped on a 3 foot column of water and lit by a 3 W UV light. In slow motion, the green fluorescent liquid forms inverted mushrooms, swirls, sheets and eddies which are constantly moving.

Sick of green? Throw in some yellow rhodamine or even a drop of (non-fluorescent) food colouring.
Mesmerising. Photos do not do it justice due to focusing difficulties with the magnifying column of water .
The whole display takes place over 20 mins or so before it starts to get too muddied but there is a lot of minute detail happening during that time.
The set up with an acrylic drum from a printing set-up. I have two of these and have made them up into a display, so I can run them at different times. There is a 3W ultraviolet LED for good illumination of the whole length of the display. The perforated strip here is an attempt to help focusing.
This was a drop of blue food colouring. It is not fluorescent so just appears dark with a green tinge.
