Making big sparks. Invented by Nikola Tesla in the 1860s, Tesla coils are a way of making huge high voltage sparks. Impressive, frightening and dangerous. See how they are made and the visual effects they can create. In this section, we explore not only the science but also the art to create unforgettable images.

Neon and Fluoro Tubes

Neon vs Fluoro shootout.

Neon and Fluoro Tubes, 2007

This was just another quick demo of a comparison between neon and fluoro tubes for Tesla coils.

Above shows a similar length neon and a fluorescent tube with ends connected. The electrode end has been made identical by using same sized electrodes. One has to bring the neon much closer to fire it. Of course the color is much nicer…

SIDAC Spark Substitute Solid State Tesla Coil (SSSSSTC)

SIDAC's are devices that break down at a certain applied voltage. Put enough of them together and you get a (sort of) spark gap.

This is my earliest use of electronics to drive a solid state Tesla coil using  SIDAC’s in place of a spark gap. It is a proof of principle coil rather than a big performer.  “Continue reading” for more details and photos.  Continue reading
